Job Summary

The Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs (VPASA) is the chief academic and student affairs officer who reports directly to the College President. The VPASA provides strategic leadership for the overall planning, organizing, supervision, communication, and evaluation of the academic and student services areas to ensure excellence in offering educational opportunities and student services. The VPASA aligns and coordinates the development and implementation of all academic programs and student services consistent with our mission and strategic priorities; provides supervision, evaluation, and professional development for the administrative, faculty, and support staff assigned respective areas; actively leads a shared collaborative vision in building and enhancing curriculum, career/workforce, continuing education, enrollment management, advising and retention services, and delivery of extracurricular services to the student body.

John Wood Community College is the educational link between business and community in the West Central Illinois Region. JWCC collaboratively creates innovative and relevant academic and training programs with business leaders to educate people and the workforce for today's needs and tomorrow's opportunities. JWCC has centers in Quincy, Pittsfield, Baylis and Mt. Sterling, Illinois. Programs include a comprehensive baccalaureate transfer curriculum, customized business training, career/technical degrees and certificates and personal enrichment courses.

John Wood Community College is an educational leader in comprehensive community college education in West Central Illinois and is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. Founded in 1974, the college's main campus and administrative center is located in the vibrant city of Quincy, Illinois. The main campus opened in January 2002 and is located on 150-acres of beautiful, sprawling landscape. The College operates four branch campuses: the Workforce Development Center in Quincy, the Southeast Education Center in Pittsfield, the Agricultural Education Center in Baylis, and the Mt. Sterling Education Center in Mt. Sterling.

John Wood serves an average fall enrollment of 1,900 students across a nine-county area of Western Illinois. Minimum Qualifications

An earned Doctorate from an accredited institution is required. Five years of administrative experience required, including program development, strategic planning, operational oversight, and fiscal management. Five years of full-time teaching in higher education are required.


Desired Qualifications

An earned Doctorate in higher education or a closely related field. Community college teaching and administration experience. Experience in a union setting. Knowledge and experience in working with the Higher Learning Commission and Illinois Community College Board.


Essential Functions

-Assists the President in planning, organizing, and directing the operation, staffing, and budgeting needs of the college in support of increasing student success which includes, but is not limited to, increasing the number of students earning credentials and transferring seamlessly to our four-year partner institutions or entering the workforce, and increasing the students in ABE/GED/ESL in preparation to be college ready.

-Coordinates activities of the college's academic and student programs through the supervision of the deans and directors.

-Works with faculty and staff at all levels in developing, documenting, implementing, and communicating policies and procedures relating to responsibilities.

-Works to monitor and ensure compliance with the Illinois Developmental Education Reform Act and promote student success during remediation.

-Oversees articulation with all University partnerships to ensure the transferability of John Wood Community College's courses and degree programs.

-Strategically plans, establishes priorities, assigns work, monitors progress, and evaluates results of all academic programs and student services at the College.

-Oversees academic and student services accreditation in collaboration with other areas from across the college.

-Provides vision and leadership toward a seamless enrollment process for new, current, traditional, non-traditional, and special interest students.

-Works collaboratively with marketing in identifying and implementing creative recruitment and marketing strategies designed to meet student enrollment goals.

-Oversees student service-related retention efforts for the college to ensure collaboration and consistency between offices responsible for instructional retention.

-Provides leadership in developing and initiating innovative programs.

-Oversees the development of the academic department budget and student services budget and monitors expenditures to ensure adherence to budget.

-Works with faculty and staff at all levels in developing, documenting, implementing, and communicating policies and procedures relating to responsibilities.

-Encourages collaborative relationships between institutional departments to enhance and increase student support and success.

- Ensures compliance with all John Wood Community College policies and procedures.

-Provide guidance and oversight for matters that fall under Title IX.

-Performs other duties as assigned.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

-Experience in higher education accreditation procedures, articulation processes, and program review.

-Demonstrated ability to create a learning environment that fosters student success

-Knowledge and experience in developing and implementing the AACC Career Pathway model

-Demonstrated leadership in using assessment to improve the quality of teaching and learning continuously.

-Supervisory experience in the evaluation of faculty and administrative personnel.

-Demonstrated knowledge of and experience in leading and developing Student Affairs programs, including student enrollment services, student engagement and leadership development, student-support services, and athletics.

-Demonstrated commitment to diversity and multiculturalism in one's work experience.


Work Schedule

Monday – Thursday 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Friday 8:00 am – 12:00 pm, Some evenings and weekends may be required
